You can get a decent one for around $20 at Walmart, Target, CVS or any stores that are similar. Careful with the cheaper ones as they may not be full ceramic. You could end up damaging your hari even more. Maybe you can wait until your birthday or the holidays and get a good one as a gift.
My first one was a Conair I picked up from Target for $25. Then I saved up and bought a real good ceramic one. The brand I got was Unil. 1 inch wide and 3 inches long. Heats up in less than 5 seconds and maintains a constant temp. Goes up to 400 degrees. A bit pricey at $169, in the stores but I got it off eBay for $60.

mine is by conair i bought mine at walmart it's like $25.00 or less
A friend of mine got a conair one, and she loves it. Uses it all the time now. It was a two in one, it came with a large curling iron that you can change the heads on. She flattens it, and then curls the ends for just a few seconds each piece of hair she does, this keeps it flat, but any dry ends, this makes it blend into the hair better, otherwise, any dry ends would stick out. The dry ends are because her hair dresser is out of town right now, not from use from the iron. She says she's noticed no harm done to her hair in months. Most pharmacy and department stores should carry conair ceramic straighteners. :)
I usually wear my hair how the Creator meant it too be...so I get what your Mother is saying on a few levels. ';Straightener'; if you mean chemically, not good at ALL! But the ceramic tool is terrific, easy to use and controlled heat settings. I picked up one at Sally's beauty supply, it was more than $20, it was closer to $50, but go with your Mother to pick the best one...BUT try this product called ';HOT STRAIGHT'; by Loreal's Studio Line. It is FABULOUS, my daughter discovered it and you will love it! You can find it at CVS, Savon's, I'm not sure where you live but if you go onto their website you can find out who the retailers are.
if you want a cheap one form Walmart, i suggest you buy the REVLON STYLIX it's about an inch thick, has an on/off switch, heats up a lot, and it's ceramic. it's only 25 dollars. it's really good believe me. my hair is naturally curly and super thick and people acutally think that my hair is naturally straight! it's one of the best straighteners i've ever had. it's white with red plates and it comes in a white box.
just so you know, i've tried conair and it doesn't work. it was about 25 dollars too. so don't buy something that doesn't work for the same price.
